Mental health and self-care have become important topics to young adults, especially on college campuses. Saint Xavier University’s (SXU) Counseling Center thoroughly understands the need for support among students, and has been named “Agency of the Year” by the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) Southwest. This honor is given yearly to an organization that has positively transformed the lives of individuals with mental illness in the community.
Based on nominations, NAMI’s board carefully reviews the qualifications and votes to select a recipient. Organizations who have obtained this award in the past include: Catholic Charities LOSS Program, the John Howard Association of Illinois, Oak Lawn Family Service, Sertoma Center, South Suburban PADS and Thresholds. SXU’s Counseling Center stood out because of its unique suicide prevention strategies and the high quality of services provided to students free of charge.
SXU’s Counseling Center was notified in February 2017 that they were chosen as this year’s “Agency of the Year” recipient. The importance SXU’s administration places on mental health services for its students is crucial to this title. The investment in essential resources ensures students receive the highest quality of care possible.
“I’m honored that the department has been recognized by an outside agency for the commitment and expertise of our staff as we serve SXU students,” said Karen Shockley, licensed clinical professional counselor. “We work hard to help students through very difficult times, and it’s always encouraging when the values of our work is applauded.”
NAMI is a leading mental health organization throughout the nation. In 1979, it began around a kitchen table, and it is now one of the largest grassroots organizations in the country dedicated to creating awareness for mental illness. It is their mission to educate and advocate for acceptance and excellence in care.
