SXU’s Mathematics Faculty Start Math Teachers’ Circle

Saint Xavier University’s (SXU) Department of Mathematics Associate Professor Ahmad Mojiri, Ph.D., and Assistant Professor Kristen Schreck, D.A., are members of a leadership team who were recently awarded a grant from the American Institute of Mathematics to create a Math Teachers’ Circle (MTC) in the Southwest Suburbs of Chicago. Dr. Mojiri and Dr. Schreck are working with mathematics faculty from Lewis University and Trinity Christian College along with middle school mathematics teachers on the leadership team.

The grant to develop a MTC in the area provides the opportunity for local middle school mathematics teachers and college mathematics professors to collaborate on developing and refining teachers’ problem-solving skills in a supportive group environment. At the workshops and monthly meetings, which begin in fall 2016, middle school teachers will work on challenging open-ended problems to enrich their own mathematical ability. These problems will also serve as a models for student-centered and inquiry based learning. MTC’s create a means to strengthen the general mathematics community by producing greater conversation and collaboration among teachers of mathematics at all levels.
