Staff and faculty invited to support local charities at Walk for Life on April 12

Saint Xavier University will host a Walk for Life event from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Sat., April 12 in the Shannon Center.

The event’s goal is to raise funds and spread awareness to support Chicago organizations serving those in need of education, health care, and basic necessities such as food and housing. Teams will walk the track while other activities also take place including games, an open mic, bake sales, and more.

Donations by cash or check can be sent to Mercy Ministry Center or Office of Campus Life (L-103). Checks can be made payable to one of the above organizations. Donations will be shared with:

  • The Port Ministries Free Clinic, a basic health care provider for the uninsured and homeless.  Staffed entirely by volunteer physicians and other health professionals, the clinic offers physicals, immunizations, free treatment and medications as well as educational programs such as well-baby care and other services relative to family health and well-being.
  • El Valor, which means courage in Spanish, is a nationally recognized non-profit organization that for 40 years has delivered programs that benefit people with disabilities, the disenfranchised and the underserved.  El Valor’s mission is to support and challenge urban families to achieve excellence and fully participate in community life.
  • Kiva Loans, a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty.  Leveraging the internet and a worldwide network of microfinance institutions, Kiva lets individuals lend as little as $25 to help create opportunity around the world.

SXU senior biology/pre-med major Jessica Muñoz is leading a collaborative effort among six student organizations (Tri Beta Biology Honor Society, Service Club, Mercy Students for Peace and Justice, Asian American Cultural Exchange, Unidos, and the Muslim Student Association) and University Housing Student Staff with support from Campus Life and the Schmitt Scholars Program to sponsor the event.
