For over 60 years Founders’ Day (formerly, Saint Francis Xavier Day) has invited SXU faculty, staff, students, and friends to pause in the frenzy of December to celebrate the University’s founders and its liberal arts curriculum.
This year, Founders’ Day falls on Tues., Dec. 3, feast day of Saint Francis Xavier, the Spanish missionary who inspired Mother Frances Xavier Warde’s own missionary zeal – making both of them namesakes of the University.
Founders’ Day offers all members of the Saint Xavier community an opportunity to honor the institution’s rich Catholic and Mercy heritage. The Eucharistic liturgy will be celebrated at noon in McDonough Chapel with Patrick McGrath, S.J., president of Loyola Academy in Wilmette, presiding and preaching. The Founders’ Day celebration of founding persons and of SXU’s foundational liberal arts curriculum will take place at 3:30 p.m. in McDonough Chapel. A reception will follow.
Founders’ Day is sponsored by the Office for University Mission and Ministry. All are welcome to attend both of the day’s special events.
