Education students, apply for membership in SXU’s Kappa Delta Pi chapter

If you are an undergraduate or graduate student in the School of Education, you may be eligible to apply for membership in the Sigma Theta chapter of Kappa Delta Pi. One of the largest and most prestigious educational honor societies in the world, Kappa Delta Pi dedicated to the ideals of Fidelity to Humanity, Service, Science, and Toil.

To qualify for membership, you must have a current overall cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher at the undergraduate level or a current overall cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher at the graduate level. You must also have successfully completed a minimum of 12 semester credits of professional education coursework.

Each application is reviewed by the chapter membership committee and submitted to School of Education faculty members for final membership approval. If you are accepted for membership into this prestigious honor society, you will be notified of your success in the process via your SXU email address.

If your petition to join successfully passes each of the stages listed above and you decide to accept the invitation to membership in Sigma Theta, you will be required to:

  1. Pay an initial membership fee of $60, which must be returned with your Potential Member Information sheet no later than Mon., March 11. This fee covers both national and local dues for one year and a one-time installation fee. Kappa Delta Pi Honor Cords also will be available for purchase at the Orientation meeting for $12 per cord; these honor cords will not be available on graduation day.
  2. Attend a required Orientation meeting preceding the Initiation Ceremony from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Sun., April 14 in Room L211 in the Warde Academic Center. At the Orientation meeting, you will meet the current officers of the chapter and complete membership paperwork. As a group, you will then be invited to assemble outside of the Butler Reception Room for photographs and to prepare for the entrance procession.
  3. Attend the official Initiation Ceremony which will take place immediately following the Orientation at 2 p.m. on Sun., April 14 in the Butler Reception Room, located in the Warde Academic Center.
  4. A reception in the foyer outside of the Butler Reception Room will be held immediately following the initiation ceremony. Attendance at both the orientation and the initiation is a requirement – failure to attend both will result in the withdrawal of the invitation to membership.

After meeting all requirements above, we hope you will become an active member and participate in our many programs and meetings throughout the academic year. We encourage you to visit the official Kappa Delta Pi website to view the many benefits of being a member. If you are already a member, you do not need to attend another initiation. If you are an online student living a distance from campus – please contact Dr. Ellen Lilly at for information on an alternative path to joining Kappa Delta Pi.
