Saint Xavier University junior guard Brad Karp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) headlined the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Men’s Basketball Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) when the teams were released Monday afternoon. The Capital One College Division Academic All-America® basketball teams are comprised of student-athletes from both divisions of the NAIA as well as Canadian and two-year institutions. Karp was chosen as the winner of the Capital One Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year award for the men’s basketball team out of the other 14 players who earned a spot on either the first, second or third teams (five players selected for each team). Last year, Karp earned a spot on the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Second Team as a sophomore.
Karp is majoring in biology at Saint Xavier University and carries a 3.61 cumulative grade-point average (GPA). He currently leads the Cougars in scoring and rebounding this season averaging 22.1 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. He ranks fourth in NAIA Division II in total scoring with 649 points and is quickly closing in on his 2,000th career point (1,949). In addition, Karp has been named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Player of the Week six times out of 13 weeks this season. He has led the No. 7 ranked Cougars to a 26-4 record this season. Last year, Karp earned NAIA All-American second team honors averaging 23.6 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest. A two-time All-CCAC first team honoree, Karp was the CCAC Freshman of the Year in 2010-11 when he averaged 19.5 points per game.
“No one is more deserving of this type of award than Brad Karp,” said Saint Xavier University men’s basketball coach Tom O’Malley. “Brad works hard every single day to make sure that he excels in everything he puts his mind to. He has been an absolute pleasure to coach these last three years and it has been remarkable to see the things he has been able to accomplish during his college career. It really is hard to believe that he is only a junior.”
Joining Karp on the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Men’s Basketball Team were senior Casey Coons from Taylor University (Ind.), senior Coleson Rakestraw from John Brown University (Ark.), senior Trevor Wolterstorff from Dordt College (Iowa) and junior Michael Greene from Northwest University (Wash.). Coons, Greene and Rakestraw all joined Karp as repeat winners from the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® College Division Men’s Basketball Team. Coons was the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year.
Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports. For more information about the Academic All-America® Teams program, please visit www.cosida.com.
