Staff and faculty from every SXU location are invited to warm up with “a comfortable cup of tea” and conversation with colleagues at First Friday Tea next week from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Fri., Feb. 1 in the Butler Reception Room. Scones and other tasty treats will be served.
Staff members from Records and Advising, hosts for this initial Tea of 2013, have researched the month of February and chosen “Warm Someone’s Heart” as their theme. Were they thinking of Valentine’s Day? Maybe, but their real focus fell on Feb. 17, which is national Random Acts of Kindness Day. So come prepared to warm up not only with tea or coffee, but also with a spirit of kindness that reflects the very origins of First Friday Tea.
And what are those origins? SXU’s tradition of First Friday Tea stems from a moment of kindness by Mercy founder Catherine McAuley who, as she was dying, asked that the sisters attending her have a “comfortable cup of tea” after she was gone. In keeping with that thoughtfulness, as well as with such SXU core values such as hospitality, respect, and service, the Office for University Mission and Heritage sponsors several First Friday Teas each year.
