Saint Xavier University will honor its student, staff, and faculty veterans at a Veterans Day Celebration from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Fri., Nov. 9. This event is open to the public.
The event will begin with a ceremony at the Academy Bell outside the Warde Academic Center at the Chicago campus, 3700 W. 103rd St. There will be a brief speech to commemorate the event and recognize SXU community members who served in the armed forces. Each service member’s name will be read and the Academy Bell will be rung after each name, followed by a moment of silence to honor fallen service members. Afterwards, a bugler will play Taps.
A small reception with refreshments will follow in the Warde Academic Center Lobby. A Fallen Comrade table will be set up in honor of service members who did not return. The table is an empty place setting for one with several symbolic items, such as a red rose in a vase to remind us of the lives of the fallen, an inverted glass to remember those who cannot toast with us anymore, and a slice of lemon on the bread plate for the bitter fate of those who never return.
