Noon classes cancelled for Spirit of Mercy Day

The Saint Xavier University community is invited to celebrate Spirit of Mercy Day on Wed., Sept. 26.

This day honors the Sisters of Mercy, SXU’s founders and sponsors, on the traditional feast of Our Lady of Mercy and incorporates the Catholic tradition of asking for the blessing of the Holy Spirit on the academic community.

Spirit of Mercy Day will include the following events.

  • The Spirit of Mercy Day Mass will take place at noon in McDonough Chapel of the Mother of Mercy. All classes taking place at noon are cancelled, so everyone may attend. Sister Betty Smith, RSM, a member of the Conference for Mercy Higher Education Canonical Sponsor Council, will give the reflection and Queen of Martyrs Pastor Fr. Edward Mikolajczyk will be the celebrant. As a special departure gift, M&M cookies (representing “Mercy” and “Mission”) will be distributed to everyone.
  • The Annual Leadership Commissioning Ceremony is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. near the Academy Bell outside the Warde Academic Center’s main entrance. During this event, representatives from all University constituencies will be commissioned, including faculty, staff, administration, alumni, students, sponsors, and trustees.
  • The “Meet Some Mercy Sisters” social is at 4 p.m. in the Student Lounge in the Warde Academic Center. Students will have the opportunity to speak with several guest nuns from the Sisters of Mercy, to ask questions and to learn about their interesting lifetimes of service.
